During my Friendly Ferret hammocks project I have tested an enormous amount of fabrics and few fabrics I still have tucked in a box under the table. I had no idea what I will do with them and then it hit me. I will make ferret fabric toys because ferrets can’t have enough toys! Ferrets love toys on strings so most of my designs are like that. Our little hunters love to chase things so you know that you can’t go wrong with it.
All you need for these toys for ferrets are a few pieces of fabric and a will to sew. I made a few designs I want to share with you so you can try them too!
TABLE OF CONTENTS
1. Roller fabric toy
This toy is actually the most complicated toy on this list and it is really simple to make. You will see, you don’t have to be an expert to make it. Without further ado, let’s start making toys!
You will need:
- Fabric 10 cm x 40 cm
- Strip about 100 cm long
- Scissors
- Thread and needle
You can change the fabric dimensions as you like. Good thing is to have the same fabric for both parts. It really doesn’t matter what is the type of fabric you are using, but you can use the one which is easy to work with. Not too thick.
First, cut the fabric in the wanted dimensions. When you are done you will have one rectangle 10 cm wide and 40 cm long and one strap 100 cm long. Now, cut the hole with scissors on one end of the rectangular and pull the strap through the hole. Tie the strap around the hole so you can’t remove it. Roll the rectangular until you get the roller with the strap hanging from one side of the roller.
Now, we have to fix the roller. Use a needle and a thread to sew the roller together on the side and on both ends of the roller. When you are done, you will have a toy that looks like candy! Tie the strap, let it hang, and enjoy watching your ferrets hunt the roller! See? It isn’t complicated at all.
2. Bundle of strips
A bundle of strips is what the name says, a bundle! Extremely easy and quick to make, the most difficult part is to cut the strips. For this simple yet awesome toy you will need:
- Fabric 35 cm x 35 cm
- Scissors
Cut the fabric into identical strips, about 1 cm or 2 cm wide and 35 cm long. You will get about 15 to 20 strips for this toy. Use one of the strips to tie other strips together and you are done! You now have a bundle of strips you can put anywhere you want. You can tie it to the cage, under the table, or just let it lay on the floor. I have put it in Frida’s tent so she can play with it inside.
3. Knot after knot after knot
My last fabric toy is also very simple to make. For that toy you only have to have one thing:
- A strap 100 cm long
The length of the strap is optional, you can make it shorter or longer. All you need to do, to make this toy, is to make a knot after knot. Tie the strap together until you have a ball made entirely from knots. Leave the last 30 cm of it so you can hang it where your ferret can play with it.
You know, even though those toys are really simple, my ferrets love them. Yoda can’t seem to get enough of roller toy and knot-toy and Frida loves the bundle. Try them, they are really easy to do, and let me know if your ferrets love them too!
